Following instructions are for students who face problems in retaining the academic stuff after reading or attending a lecture.
There are few things one have to have as normal as possible
1.Sleep: If you are sleep deprived, forget about your being active & alert in the class to register what is being discussed. Minimum seven hours sleep is recommended to have an optimum level of alertness to attend any task.
2.Food Intake: If you have taken extra or very low amount of food or fluid intake before you’re attending a lecture or a task your alertness is bound to be impaired. Everybody, to an extant knows the right food and its right amount for oneself. Starving, taking junk food or fizzy and energy drinks are not helpful in the long run.
3.Bio-Clock System: Human body has its established schedules called as Bio-Clock system. Body demands sleep, food, activity and relaxation at a certain time of the day. One can easily come to know what time of the day one feels hungry, sleepy, tired, more attentive and more energetic. Respect that schedule of your body, get tuned with it and organize your activity pattern according to it, stick with it for a period of time and don’t change it until needed otherwise. Messing with Bio-Clock system is detrimental.
There are few things which one need to avoid as much as possible.
1.Emotional Issues: Emotionally upset mind would be less able to concentrate on what is being discussed, taught or being read. Emotional issue would keep the person thinking about itself or would get the mind go blank. Anger, sadness and fear are the examples of such issues.
2.Stress: If stress of studies remains below a certain level it enhances performance. However it’s going beyond a point starts impairing the attention & concentration. Stress would then induce fidgetiness and restlessness which are known killers of attention. Setting deadlines for your academic tasks are good to avoid study related stress.
3.Drugs: Use of drugs to keep you awake more than normal hours is not only dangerous for health but proved to be contra-indicatory in the long run.
There are few things which one can do to enhance your attention span.
1.Meditation: Even books on pop-psychology would have a lot of techniques to do meditation. However simply focusing on breathing can be a good way to enhance attention, to get rid of negative thoughts and to get your body calm & relaxed. Doing it regularly is very useful for students.
2.Taking notes during the lecture and making summary of them straight away after it helps in keeping attention and retention afterwards.
3.Making a summary in minimum words after reading a paragraph in the book enhances comprehension of the text and retention. It also helps in quick revision.
